Electromechanical engineering is a collection of engineering disciplines around the themes motion, force and energy. The world of electromechanical engineering encompasses development, design, manufacturing, testing and control of tools, machines, vehicles and other electrical or mechanical systems, as well as research on these topics.
What
The world of electromechanical engineering encompasses development, design, manufacturing, testing and control of tools, machines, vehicles and other electrical or mechanical systems, as well as research on these topics. The Electromechanical Engineering is a two-year degree programme intended to prepare students for a future technical leadership role in industry. The programme offers in-depth training in all aspects of electromechanical engineering and its economic and social implications based on a solide scientific basis.
Graduates will have acquired an attitude of scientific synthesis, analytical reasoning as well as scientific and technical independence. Training in research skills provides mastery in developing, implementing and monitoring technical and scientific innovations.
Remarks
The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (FEA) offers most of its Engineering programmes at Master’s level in English. This underlines the international ambition of the faculty, as well as the importance of an international education and multiple language skills for students.
For whom
The admission requirements vary. Depending on your prior education, you are either able to enrol directly, or there are additional requirements.
Structure
The programme consists of a general module, main subject modules, electives and a dissertation. The general module contains course units on all topics related to Electromechanical Engineering, ranging from electrical drives and machine manufacturing, to management skills.
Students can choose one of five main subject modules with specialist course units on different topics of interest. The Mechanical Construction main subject focuses on design, manufacturing and maintenance of machines and mechanical equipment.
Through elective course units students broaden their knowledge and skills on technical and non-technical topics. The Master’s dissertation is a final step in the learning process. It aims at fostering the ability to conduct scientific research independently.
Labour Market
Electromechanical Engineering graduates from all five main subjects are employed in all branches of industry. Both at government agencies and private companies their range of professional activity is broad and varied: electrical energy production and distribution, electrical and mechanical equipment manufacturing, metal industry, building construction, transport, consultancy, banking and insurance.
Students who opted for the Mechanical Construction main subject find work in companies developing machines and mechanical constructions for all industrial sectors. This comprises mechanical design (materials selection, component selection, lifetime analysis), production methods (machining, forming …) and construction methods (welding, fastening…). Particular attention goes to safety, sustainability and cost related aspects.

- Job security: our Electromechanical Engineering graduates find employment in all branches of industry. Both in government agencies and private companies, their field of activity is broad and varied: electrical energy production and distribution, electrical and mechanical equipment manufacturing, metal industry, building construction, transport and maritime industry, consultancy, banking and insurance.
- Broad common ground, choose your accent: All Electromechanical Engineering students get a broad common ground training. In the master students are allowed to choose from one of the five main subjects. The main subject in Maritime Engineering is unique in Flanders.
- State-of-the-art labs are available for the staff and these are strongly integrated in lab sessions for the students. This enforces the link with the scientific research and improves the scientific-oriented skills.
- Comprehensive logistic support for the students: There are various committees with representatives of students and scientific staff. In addition, the students of electromechanical engineering established their own student organisation (PKarus). Company visits, information sessions and social activities intensify and improve the internal and external.

- Project-based learning: projects are embedded throughout the entire curriculum, aimed at strengthening our students’ practice-oriented skills required by industry.
- Student satisfaction: the official student surveys show high student satisfaction, with regard to quality, organization, consistency as well as programme content.
- Work placement programme: our Master’s curriculum contains opportunities for national and international work placements in companies. Both students and industry highly appreciate this experience.
Challenges
- Sustainability: we incorporate aspects of sustainable engineering in various course units, but the students do not experience this as such. We are currently working on introducing a sustainability speciality and sustainability projects.
- Internationalisation: lthough we offer an English-taught Master’s programme, we scarcely attract international students with strong profiles. On the other hand, only a handful of our own students complete part of their programme abroad.
- Diversity: our programme would benefit from a more diverse student intake. To that purpose, we actively contribute to the implementation of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture’s diversity action plan.
This study programme is accredited by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (Dutch: NVAO). Accreditation was extended following the positive outcome of the institutional review in 2022.
