Master of Science in Conflict and Development Studies

The Master in Conflict and Development Studies allows you to gain insight into the broader thinking about conflict and development-related issues, and how to analyse these in a critical manner. You also learn to analyse policy interventions by governments and (inter)national organisations in this domain. The programme structure allows you to choose to put an emphasis on a more policy-oriented or a more academically oriented approach.

Learning outcomes

To have an advanced knowledge of theories and concepts about conflict and development and to compare them critically.

To have an understanding of current issues and trends of conflict and development in the Global South, including their political, cultural, environmental, economic, social, regional, transnational and humanitarian aspects.

To have an advanced knowledge of the historical and current role of local, national, regional and transnational actors in the field of conflict and development.

To have an insight into the development of contemporary thinking about and in the Global South and to reflect on the scientific and social position of this knowledge.

Using general anthropological, economic, historical, political, sociological and sustainability-related theories as resources in the study of conflict and development in and from the Global South.

Translate general and subject-specific knowledge and insights into individual case studies.

Design an original problem statement and research question and link it to the state of international research.

Independently organize scientific (field)work in the broad sense of the term.

Adjust creative methods, theoretical frameworks and the research design where necessary.

Interpreting one's own research independently and critically.

In-depth analysis of complex problems of conflict and development.

Independently formulate a well-argued and critical position on the debates and issues in the field of conflict and development studies.

Making connections and developing and applying new viewpoints

To have an insight into the ethical and intercultural aspects that research entails, both for the researcher and for his/her study object.

To have an inquisitive attitude and be willing to continuously update insights about conflict and development in the Global South.

Correctly displaying insights and research in a scientific dissertation, article or a policy report.

Constructive collaboration with peers during joint written and oral presentations, discussion, papers, field work and incorporation of sources.

Communicate clearly and authoritatively, orally and in writing, about the field and one's own research with colleagues, policy makers, stakeholders and non-experts.

Use academic and professional language in oral and written presentations, papers, discussions and research

Integrate current issues of conflict and development in the Global South and their impact on the North into one's research.
