Master of Science in Laboratory Medicine
The Laboratory Medicine programme delivers graduates with a specialist knowledge of the human physiology/biochemistry and the biological markers for the detection of pathological conditions. In addition, they master the methods for analysing parameters in various biological matrices. We prepare our graduates for managerial positions in the healthcare chain with a focus on medical advice and analysis.

Competence field 1: Competence in one or more sciences
- Insight in the 3 main disciplines of clinical biology (Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Microbiology).
- Knowledge of quality assurance within the laboratory.
- Knowledge of the relevance of clinical trials and ability to interpret the results.
- Ability to apply and independently conduct the different sampling methods, with insight into the different pre-analytical aspects and their impact on the final research result.
- Follow developments in various disciplines by way of ICT, printed sources and further training.
- Use scientific literature for the selection and implementation of diagnostic tests.
- Independently develop, elaborate, validate, apply and interpret procedures for laboratory research.
- Independently conduct and report on fundamental and applied scientific research.
- Analytical, synthetic, problem-solving and problem-preventing thinking in laboratory research in all its sub-disciplines.
- Independently analyse complex analytical and clinical diagnostic problems.
- Research-oriented and evidence-based clinical-analytical thinking and acting.
- Possess scientific curiosity and an attitude of lifelong learning.
- Critically interpret laboratory results and translate them into the clinic as a consultant.
- Provide advice in relation to requests and interpretation of laboratory analyses.
- Communicate and cooperate effectively in a multidisciplinary professional environment.
- Provide leadership within an (accredited) laboratory setting.
- Ability to provide and receive feedback.
- Ethical and deontological conduct when exercising the profession.
- Act responsibly towards the patient and society.
- Treat patients and other health professionals fairly and with respect.
- Manage a clinical laboratory and have knowledge of, and the ability to apply, the legislation and principles of quality control.

- Possess a broad international vision in relation to the discipline and be familiar with the intercultural reality in the workplace and with patients.
Legal Requirements regarding Professional Duties the Diploma complies with
Het uitoefenen van het beroep van apotheker klinisch bioloog is onderworpen aan de volgende vereisten:
- beschikken over het diploma van apotheker (of geneesheer)
- beschikken over de erkenning als apotheker specialist in de klinische biologie
- beschikken over het visum van de provinciale geneeskundige commissie
- ingeschreven zijn bij de Orde der Apothekers
