Master of Science in Sustainable Land Management (Land and Groundwater Management)
The Master of Science in Sustainable Land Management is a two-year, full-time programme. Students can choose between two main subjects: Land and Groundwater Management, and Urban Land Engineering. Sustainable Land Management refers to practices and technologies that aim at integrating the management of land, water and other environmental resources to meet human needs while ensuring the long-term sustainability of ecosystem services and livelihoods.

- Possess the basics to conduct field work (geophysical prospecting, subsurface and groundwater monitoring, subsurface and groundwater sampling), interpret analytical data, and manage and interpret existing cartographic or remote sensing data using modern equipment, informatics and computer technology.
- Characterize land and groundwater physico-chemically with advanced techniques to understand land and groundwater processes, both physically and chemically, and assess the influences by and on natural and anthropogenic factors.
- Recognize interaction with other relevant science domains and identify the need to integrate them within the context of more advanced ideas and practical applications and problem solving.
- Demonstrate critical consideration of and reflection on known and new theories, models or interpretation within the area of expertise.
- Plan and execute target orientated experiments or simulations independently and critically evaluate the collected data.
- Develop and execute original scientific research and/or apply innovative ideas within research units.
- Write a research project proposal with due attention to its management, and entrepreneurial and socio-economic aspects.
- Formulate hypotheses, use or design experiments to test these hypotheses, report on the results, both written and orally, and communicate findings to experts and the general public.
- Possess a broad knowledge at an advanced level in basic disciplines (hydrogeology, hydrology and hydrogeomorphology, soil physics, geotechnics) that provide a polyvalent scientific understanding needed (i) to evaluate the potential of land and groundwater, and of the management of these resources in relation to landscape dynamics, environmental and other land use aspects, as well as geotechnical aspects or (ii) to evaluate the specific environmental and geotechnical problems of the urban domain, and to adequately manage urban land and water.
