Master of Arts in History
Historians try to reconstruct and fathom the origins, development and coherence of human civilization. The master’s curriculum contains the actual discipline-specific expertise, with at its heart the master’s dissertation and supporting electives (chronologically, thematically or regionally) tying in with your choice of approach.

- A Master in History can critically apply their understanding of a chosen period, region, and theme while analysing complex issues.
- A Master in History can autonomously identify and analyse the dynamics of historical processes and patterns in complex historical situations.
- A Master in History can use the epistemology of historiography, societal viewpoints and ethical views to analyse complex historical insights.
- A Master in History can apply their understanding of and insights into related social sciences and humanities disciplines to history research and (or) professional activities.
- A Master in History can set up and carry out research independently, including a relevant problem statement, thorough heuristics for sources, a comprehensive review of the literature, and a critical interpretation that results in knowledge creation.
- A Master in History can choose, evaluate and apply appropriate (digital) qualitative and (or) quantitative research methods.
- A Master in History can critically analyse and contextualise historiographical debates and integrate them into research.
- A Master in History handles published and unpublished sources, academic literature and technological tools while observing the principles of academic integrity.
- A Master in History can communicate clearly and academically on history research, both in writing and orally.
- A Master in History can consider historical matters and issues systematically, self-critically, and value-consciously and look at them from multiple perspectives (multiperspectivism).
- A Master in History can correctly interpret and use Dutch- and other-language (at least English and French) historical sources and academic specialist literature.
- A Master in History can communicate and debate on history research and the role of the past in the present with peers and non-peers.
- A Master in History can contribute constructively to project-based collaboration with peers.
- A Master in History appreciates and critically reflects on the complexity of history and realises that every perspective on the past is limited to a specific time and place and, therefore, never free from value judgements.
