Master of Science in Maritime Science
The Maritime Science programme is a globally unique multidisciplinary programme aimed at students from diverse academic backgrounds who possess a common interest in the maritime world and its evolutions. Via a three-pillar structure (technical-general, economic-logistic, legal), students are taught everything they need to know for a successful career in the dynamic maritime sector.

Competence field 1: Competences in one/more scientific discipline(s)
- Having in-depth knowledge and understanding of the scope, content, structure and methodology of the various areas of law related to maritime activities (law of the sea, maritime law, transport law, ...).
- Having in-depth knowledge and understanding of the scope, content, structure and methodology of the various branches of transport economics and logistics (maritime and port economics, supply chain management, sustainable mobility, ...).
- Having basic knowledge and understanding of the technical aspects that influence the relevant fields of law and transport economics (ship technology, port technology, port planning, …).
- Having knowledge of current debates, issues and trends within the field of maritime science, such as ongoing evolutions relating to sustainable development, energy transition, the circular economy and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria.
- Having knowledge of interdisciplinary scientific research and practice affecting the maritime sector.
- Using sources of maritime science – within one domain as well as interdisciplinary – in a scientific manner, in order to independently analyse maritime issues and to formulate answers to research questions.
- Identifying and assessing relevant legal rules and provisions in order to apply them to actual maritime cases.
- Identifying and assessing relevant concepts and theories in the field of logistics and maritime transport in order to apply them to actual maritime cases.
- Combining relevant branches of maritime science in order to apply them in an integrated manner to actual maritime cases.
- Formulating a creative and critical position on a maritime issue through scientific analysis and/or logical reasoning.
- Assimilating new and evolving maritime knowledge from a variety of disciplines through independent study.
- Presenting and defending a given or a personal position regarding maritime issues based on a scientific argumentation.
- Scientifically analysing, summarizing and explaining a maritime issue.
- Respecting insights from colleagues, who may have different views or perspectives, while approaching maritime issues.
- Being aware of the role and responsibility of the maritime scientist within society, among others in relation to climate change and the UN sustainable development goals (UN SDGs).
- Recognizing the technical, legal and economic implications of new developments within the maritime sector.
- Integrating cultural sensitivity, respect for diversity, pluralism and tolerance into scientific work and professional performance in the field of maritime science.
