For whom

The admission requirements depend on your prior education (type of degree, country of issue etc.) or additional experience.

Structure

In first semester students choose five courses (of 6 credits each): two from the set of general courses and three specialisation courses (with at least two from one specific area of specialisation, which will also be the area of the master’s dissertation and of the intensive course work and/or apprenticeship in the second semester).

- Linguistics in a Comparative Perspective (Ghent University)
- Cognitive and Functional Linguistics (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)
- Multilingual and Foreign Language Learning and Teaching (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)
- Natural Language Processing:Theory and Practice (Ghent University)

Students enrol at the university that organizes the specialisation of their choice. It is possible to follow courses from the other participating universities since there is a close cooperation between the two universities.
In the second semester students mainly focus on their master’s dissertation (18 credits) which should be in their area of specialisation. They are also expected to take part in intensive course work and/or an apprenticeship in their area of specialisation (12 credits).

Master’s dissertation
The master’s dissertation is a requirement for every candidate to obtain a master‘s degree. The master’s dissertation is an original piece of research work. It aims to develop and strengthen the research capacity skills of the students. The student selects a topic and is given guidance by a supervisor. The master’s dissertation consists of a critical bibliography review part, a theoretical reflection and an original analysis of the topic.

Labour Market

This master’s programme is not labour market oriented; it is an excellent preparation for students who want to start a research project (PhD) in the field of linguistics.
