Ghent University sees the quality of education as an internal self-evaluation process, in which faculties and programs compare the goals they have set themselves to the achieved results and adjust the policy accordingly. The portfolios constitute an important link in this process. The achieved results are based on quantitative and qualitative information from relevant stakeholders (students, teachers, professional field, international experts, alumni, etc.).The ‘peer learning visits’, the yearly quality meeting and the Education Quality Office (‘OKB’) make sure the PDCA cycle is closed at various policy levels and help to keep the improvement policy sharp.

  1. Internationality: As only international master in the fusion area in Europe, we provide students with a high-level education in the field, in a multicultural environment, supported by the main actors of the nuclear fusion domain. Nuclear fusion is an international research domain by excellence.
  2. Networking: We provide opportunities to the students to develop their network in the fusion scene. The students can forge long lasting bonds with their peers, they get to know and will be known by the major actors in the field.
  3. Theory and practice: Via ‘joint sessions’ at research institutes, the programme offers realistic work environments, where students can combine their acquired theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
  4. Programme: The course programme makes extensive use of the specific competences of all his partners. The theses are at the forefront of the research.
  5. Talent development: As a student, you have a certain freedom of choice to compose your curriculum to your own interests. You may choose between two study tracks, depending on your domain of interest: Fusion Science or Fusion Engineering, and from a broad range of elective courses.

  1. International and multicultural profile: Students study in two countries, can choose between 7 universities and are able to follow labs, courses and events at varying locations. The teaching staff is international and the students are attracted from all over the world.
  2. Networking: Students build up a strong international network, both with fellow students and leading international researchers.
  3. Preparation to working life: We prepare students, via practical work in realistic environments, to the real life as a researcher in fusion science and engineering.
  4. Quality recognition: This European master is highly regarded in the fusion domain. A large fraction of the students continue for a PhD, which shows the international recognition for this unique programme. Many continue on their way to leading positions at universities, research institutes or industry.
  5. Complementarity: The programme partners (research institutions and universities) offer diverse and complementary course packages and research facilities.


Kwaliteitszorg van de opleiding: werkpunten

  1. Administrative challenges: Due to the number of partners and the various countries of origin of the students, the administrative workload can be significant, both for the students (e.g. related to visa requirements) and the universities/research institutions involved (e.g. for the organisation of joint sessions).
  2. Cost control: The programme has additional costs due to the foreseen student mobility, which requires extra financing and attention to budget control. We try to attract supplementary financial sources, to ease this burden.
  3. Monitoring: The programme is aware that to maintain the coherence of the programme across the partners continuous attention is required.
