Master of Arts in Literary Studies
The Advanced Master of Arts in Literary Studies is an interuniversity programme organised by the University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Ghent University, and KU Leuven. It will expand your knowledge of contemporary literary theory, as well as historical and modern literature. Leading (inter)national literary scholars will teach you what makes literature such a vital research topic, and the various ways to study it.

Students may choose a course from the Master of Linguistics and Literature or the Master of Western Literature (both KU Leuven) to complement their programme, provided the course offers demonstrable added value to their programme, for example, in light of their master's thesis or research initiation. Students should submit a reasoned request to the coordinator in a timely manner.

- Students have an advanced knowledge of contemporary international literary studies and are familiar with current trends in research and with important research traditions.
- Students have an advanced insight into the main literature research methods and techniques; they are able to critically evaluate and compare those methods and techniques and can apply them in their own research.
- Students have insight into the cultural, linguistic, and methodological diversity of existing research traditions and can situate their own scholarly practice within those traditions.
- Students are aware of the complexity of literary phenomena and can identify and translate relevant literary problems into pertinent research questions.
- Students have an interdisciplinary attitude that allows them to critically evaluate and integrate the contributions of other, related scientific disciplines into the study of literature.
- Students can mobilize their expertise and participate in international scholarly communication with researchers from other international research traditions; they can participate actively and critically in scholarly discussions with peers.
- Students can effectively communicate their own research results, both orally and in writing, and both for an audience of specialists and non-specialists.
- Students have insight into the social and cultural role of literature, literature research and scientific research in general.
- Students are able to mobilize the acquired research and communication skills in different professional and social contexts.
