Master of Science in Advanced Dentistry (Endodontics)

Course content

The aim of the Master in Advanced Dentistry is to upgrade the general dentist to a highly qualified specialist practitioner, being capable of performing dental treatments independently within a background of broad dental, medical and sociological knowledge.

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with the morphology, physiology, and pathology of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues. Its study and practice encompass the basic and clinical sciences, including biology of the normal pulp; the etiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp; and associated periradicular conditions.The content is based on scientific literature, clinical research, biological research and extensive clinical training. In addition, a master's dissertation is written and the original data of the dissertation will be presented during an international congress. Another important part of the programme is the preclinical and clinical training. The clinical skills are developed and trained in the Permanent Training Programme. Preclinical exercises focus on the use of magnification especially microscope for non-surgical and surgical treatment, the use of endodontic technology which is not used or limitedly used in general practice for conventional or non-surgical endodontic (re)treatment , laser dentistry, and surgical endodontics. During clinical training attention is paid to diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients with a more complicated endodontic treatment need. The students will have to deal with medically compromised patients with complicated endodontic (re) treatment needs, dento-alveolar traumatology, difficult interdisciplinary cases, complicated emergency treatment, and cases demanding a fistulative, periradicular or corrective surgical approach.
At the end of the 3 year programme students have to pass a final clinical exam with an external examiner, who is also involved in the training of endodontists at another university.

During the first year of Paediatric Dentistry, attention goes mainly out to the development of the child, fear and patient management and the basic caries management. There is a focus on a diversity of disciplines in dentistry which are applied when treating a child. Apart from that, there is a first focus on paediatric disciplines, i.e. cardiology and oncology. Within the first year a practical training (under supervision) with sedation and general anaesthesia starts, with the ultimate goal to perform these treatments independently. During the second and third year, the courses and clinical training focus especially on the diagnosis and treatment of dental trauma cases and development disorders. The paediatric disciplines endocrinology, respiratory disorders and neuromotoric disorders become addressed, as well as dental symptoms related to different syndromes. Finally students become familiar with Special Care Dentistry and learn to treat patients with special needs during the theoretical courses and during the clinical training. In the end all students defend their master's dissertation and give a 1hr clinical presentation in the presence of a foreign external examiner.

Orthodontics is that part of dentistry that focuses on the correction of the teeth position and malocclusions of the dentition. During the first year, the subjects are related to orthodontic therapy. Furthermore, courses on facial growth are related to orthopaedics and orthodontics. Some development and growth disorders and syndromes related to the head region as well as craniomandibular dysfunctions are addressed during the courses. The second year is largely a continuation of the first year, but includes some practical aspects which are important in the conduct of running an orthodontic practice. Also, the long-term effects of orthodontic and orthopaedic therapy are extensively addressed.
The third and fourth year are predominantly based on the clinical treatment of orthodontic patients and the preparation of the final clinical examination, which involves the presentation of twenty treated cases in front of an interuniversitary commission.

Periodontology is the part of dentistry that focuses on diseases of the gums and the jawbone surrounding the teeth. During your dental education, you came in contact with periodontal pathology and therapy. You also discovered the possibilities of dental implants. The specialist training in periodontology aims to educate and train those dentists that have a special interest in this field, by educating them thoroughly in all aspects of oral implantology and periodontology. These treatments will also be linked with the prosthetic rehabilitation, thereby considering functional and esthetical aspects. There will also be attention for the medically compromised risk patient from a periodontal point of view.

Reconstructive Dentistry is the part of dentistry that focuses on the rehabilitation of lost aesthetics and functionality of the dentition. This involves fixed rehabilitation by means of crowns and bridges, tooth replacement using a removable denture or dental implants, as well as restorations using composite. This programme aims to educate the practitioner to become a specialist, who can take care of complex cases. This is done through lectures, preclinical exercises and clinical training.

Course structure

The master contains 60 credits and is divided over 3 years. It is combined with clinical training within the endodontics track. The specialization is scientifically supported with the obligatory master's dissertation which should be publishable in a A1 journal.

Courses are given in English but students are required to obtain proficiency in Dutch prior to treating patients in the clinical programme.
