Master of Science in Plant Biotechnology
The Master of Science in Plant Biotechnology is an advanced one-year Master's programme for students with a background in biotechnology who want to shift their focus towards fundamental plant biotechnological research. The programme aims at providing answers to the complex questions of how we will deal with the growing demand for plant-derived products such as feed and food. In Ghent, state-of-the-art science meets industrial entrepreneurship at the largest agro-biotech campus in Europe.

- Integrates advanced knowledge and skills from physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, genetic engineering, developmental biology, biochemistry, (functional) genome biology and bioinformatics, in the search for solutions to complex scientific problems in plant biotechnology.
- Applies intentionally advanced knowledge and methods from plant biotechnology to a theoretical or experimental setting.
- Integrates the various levels of organization – concerning plant development and interaction with the environment – in which molecular biological processes occur.
- Critically evaluates hypotheses, technique s and theoretical models within plant biotechnology.
- Relies on scientific methods to formulate the relevant research questions and hypotheses after critical evaluation of available information.
- Translates biotechnological research questions and hyp otheses into a problem-based and structured research strategy.
- Performs focused and problem-based plant biotechnological experiments in a scientifically correct manner.
- Formulates decisions and perspectives based on experiments in plant biotechnology.
- Assesses results of experim ents using data obtained in literature.
- Coherently analyzes and formulates complex molecular, cellular, physiological and application-oriented knowledge in plant biotechnology.
- Reflects on own thinking an d acting, and translates this into conclusions, solutions or adjustments.
- Reports orally and in writing about plant biotechnological research in a scientifically correct manner.
- Discusses both own research as research from international literature for an academic audience.
- Recognizes potential innovative applications based on experimental research results in plant biotechnology.
- Has an insight in the agro-biotech in dustry activities, related intellectual property and regulation.
- Is aware of possible consequences that certain plant biotechnological applications may have for human health, the environment and socio-economy and of measures taken to that end.
- Performs experimental work following procedures that have been developed in terms of safety and scientific integrity.
- Identifies opportunities for valorization of plant biotechnological research results.
