- Having thorough insight in the diagnostic and therapeutical possibilities of specific pathologies, and knowing how to integrate these insights into the specialist treatment planning.
- Being able to handle and prevent dental and medical emergency situations
- Being able to contribute from a certain dental specialism to the health promotion of both the individual patient, as well as his fellows and society as a whole
- Being able to critically asses and integrate scientific research within the area of dental expertise into clinical practice
- Being able to underpin a critical scientific opinion concerning recent developments within the area of dental expertise
- Being competent and adept in consulting and interpreting the biomedical literature and in setting up and implementing a logical and effective research protocol
- To report scientific research within the specialism to colleagues and non-colleagues with respect to the legal restrictions and the ethical/deontological code
- To demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills to function effectively within multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary settings.
- To communicate effectively and comprehensibly with patients and their relatives within an empathetic, honest, confidential, and ethically responsible specialist–patient relationship, taking into account diversity factors and the applicable legal framework.
- Being able to document digital and written medical information in accordance with legal requirements and communicating this information in an appropriate way to fellow dentists and other healthcare providers
- To actively participate in, and when appropriate, lead a multidisciplinary treatment team.
- To align the provision of specialized dental care with evolving developments in health economics and societal healthcare needs.
- Being able to practice specialist dentistry within the legal and ethical obligations of dental practitioners

Clinical training may be organized during the examination periods, during the weeks of catch-up activities and in the weeks during which educational activities and evaluations are suspended.

The holder of this degree complies with the diploma requirements for the use of X-rays producing professional appliances especially devised for the use of dental radiography, in accordance with the rules laid down in article 53.1 of the Royal Decree of juli 20th, 2001 on the General Regulations concerning the Protection of the Population, of the Employees and the Environment against the Danger of Ionising Radiation (Law Gazette -Belgium- August 30th, 2001).
