Bachelor of Science in Physics and Astronomy
Studying physics and astronomy is particularly suited for people in possession of a unique talent, i.e. that of combining practical ingenuity (setting up and interpreting experiments) with abstract reasoning (mathematics). Physics aims to describe and understand the behaviour of material systems under a variety of conditions.

- Have knowledge of the physical and astronomical key concepts and basic methods and have the ability to apply these at an adequate level of abstraction.
- Have a thorough basic knowledge and usage of classical physical and astronomical domains such as mechanics, waves and optics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermic and static physics, theory of relativity, solid state physics, subatomic physics, atomic and molecular physics, extragalactic and galactic astronomy.
- Have an insight into relevant historical developments in physical and astronomical research.
- Have extensive basic knowledge and practical know-how of mathematics when solving physical and astronomical problems.
- Have knowledge of standard techniques and models of physics and astronomy and the ability to use them within the relevant application domains.
- Possess ICT skills needed for physics and astronomy: programming, the ability to work with graphical software, scientific word processing (LaTeX), packages for statistical data processing and computer algebra.
- Possess the physical way of thinking, i.e. to strongly believe that every physical theory needs to be reality tested. Therefore having the ability to plan and execute a measurement on your own, process the data of the measurement in a rigorous way and critically interpret them.
- Have the ability to independently analyse complex physical and astronomical problems and verify them against existing models and insights.
- Make use of classical and modern scientific sources in a critical manner with attention for a correct and a complete citation of the reference.
- Have the ability to select, schematize and process data in a structured way.
- Have the ability to independently understand and process physical and astronomical subject-specific literature (this includes scientific English).
- Have the ability to think conceptually, analytically, systematically and in a problem-solving way at different levels of abstraction.
- Possess the physical and astronomical methodology and possess an analytical way of thinking in order to plan, finalise and potentially adapt complex processes.
- Organize learning experiences and understand, plan and evaluate the personal learning process, and adjust when necessary.
- Demonstrate accuracy, physical intuition, creativity and critical reflection.
- Possess the necessary theoretical insights and methodological skills to be able to take on a connecting master’s programme at national and international universities.
- Have knowledge of the study and/or work possibilities connected to the Bachelor of Physics and the ability to make a well thought-out choice.
- Have the ability to use the physical and astronomical terminology (also in English).
- Have the ability to systematically execute complex tasks in a group.
- Have the ability to report both written and orally on projects relevant to physics and astronomy.
- Pay attention to business aspects of physics.
- Understand the cultural, ethical and societal aspects of physics and astronomy.
