De student volgt de opleidingsonderdelen aan twee van de zes ondervermelde instellingen, in overeenstemming met zijn of haar door het Steering Committee goedgekeurde mobiliteitsschema.
Het opleidingsprogramma bestaat uit twee jaar (120 studiepunten). Het eerste jaar volgen de studenten aan één van de zes inrichtende Europese partnerinstellingen, het tweede jaar aan een andere partner. De zes inrichtende partneruniversiteiten zijn:
- Ghent University (Belgium)
- Leipzig University (Germany)
- London School of Economics and Political Science (United Kingdom)
- Roskilde University (Denmark)
- University of Vienna (Austria)
- University of Wroclaw (Poland)
Tijdens jaar 2 kunnen studenten ervoor kiezen om het eerste semester door te brengen aan een niet-Europese partnerinstelling indien dit wordt goedgekeurd door het Steering Committee. Studenten die het tweede jaar studeren aan de London School of Economics and Political Science kunnen slechts uit een beperkt aantal uitwisselingspartners kiezen.

Learning outcome (competenties)
The Master’s course prepares students for working in an increasingly multi-polar world and conveys knowledge and skills for analyzing and overcoming the disruptions of conflict-ridden globalization processes, thus imparting approaches of a European foreign policy (in its widest understanding) that is still in the stage of formation. The course is not limited to a single method of interpretation, or one disciplinary approach, but it is designed to equip highly-qualified students with the ability to contribute to the forward-looking debate on globalization processes in a self-reflective and critical manner – an essential qualification for enhancing one’s prospects in the contemporary labour market.
The core qualification aims of the study program comprise competences for dealing with different academic approaches to the phenomenon of globalization processes, their foundation and problem areas at a scientific level and related to relevant professional fields; the ability to independently work on interdisciplinary problem areas and the adequate presentation of the gathered knowledge in written and oral form.
Further qualification objectives are transferable understanding and academic skills, such as (i) understanding complex global history and international studies problems and framing them in ways which simplify while still retaining relevance; (ii) developing analysis and arguments in pursuance of an independent research question; (iii) skills to gather, deploy, combine and assess evidence of various kinds; (iv) skills to critically examine the arguments and evidence presented by others; (iv) developing consistent arguments and communicating these in clear, concise and persuasive forms.
The design of the program as well as the experiences of former graduates suggests that the fields of employment for EMGS graduates are the public sector (diplomatic service, development cooperation, and consultancy), NGOs, the private sector and basic research. Our aim is to offer for all four fields of employment a study program that is methodologically deliberated, demanding in terms of content and complemented by research internships.
At the same time, the Master’s program makes a significant contribution to developing a self-conception of our students as global citizens and is important for the teaching of values and knowledge about cultural differences.
