Final Competences of the Study Programme
Field of competency 1: Competency in one or more sciences
- Applying relevant sciences critically, independently and with the awareness of one’s own limitations in treatment of complex problems.
- Having basic understanding in the agogic, ethical, historical, sociological and legal sciences insofar as they are relevant to one’s own actions and thinking.
Field of competency 2: Scientific competency
- Interpreting in a nuanced manner and presenting correctly the results of one’s own research in a scientifically sound report, thesis or article.
- Being familiar with the most important (inter)national specialised literature, following up the latest developments in at least one of the aspects of secular humanism as well as the service provision, and integrating these into one’s own reflection and research.
- Being able to adopt a nuanced stance on social issues related to secular humanism, based on an interpretation of existing research.
Field of competency 3: Intellectual competency
- Reflecting critically on one’s own thinking, learning, decision making and actions, and adjusting these in order to develop an attitude and a mindset for lifelong learning.
- Interpreting in a nuanced manner and presenting correctly the results of one’s own research in a scientifically sound report, thesis or article.
- Making value-conscious, nuanced and thorough judgements about complex problems, based on authoritative publications or contributions in other forms from experts in the field.
Field of competency 4: Competency in co-operation and communication
- Communicating orally and in writing with experts and laypeople about one’s own projects, actions and research within secular humanism.
- Engaging actors within the field of secular humanist moral service and organised secular humanism in one’s own actions and with respect to clients, volunteers and others.
Field of competency 5: Social competency
- Being able to explain principles and values of secular humanism, and translate these into practical-agogic action.
- Examining the philosophical landscape in Belgium in a substantiated manner, and communicating the reality and challenges to laypeople.
Field of competency 6: Job-specific competency
- Providing secular humanist moral service in all its forms, with specialism in two specific areas.
- Providing advice in order to strengthen and propagate secular humanism as a collective of organisations, as a sector and in policy.
