Learning outcomes

To have basic scientific knowledge of the development, normal structure and normal functioning, genetics, diversity and behavior of companion animals and food producing animals

Locate anatomical structures of animals through palpation and perform anatomical and topographical dissections of animals

To have basic scientific knowledge of natural sciences (zoology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, botany) and to use this knowledge to understand the functioning of the animal or the infectious agent

To have insight in the taxonomy, the multiplication and the spread of infectious agents (parasitic, bacterial, mycotic, viral) and in the interactions with their host

To have knowledge of the analysis, the microbiological and technological aspects of food and the related legislation

To have knowledge of the operation, the pharmacological processes and the disposition of veterinary medicines

Mastering basic principles of animal welfare, nutrition, housing and breeding, including regulatory authorities, and economic and epidemiological aspects of animal husbandry and veterinary medicine

To apply and integrate basic veterinary knowledge to understand the basic principles of pathological processes and the development of abnormalities

To have knowledge of the principles of radioprotection and the operation of medical imaging

To have knowledge of the basic principles of communication and of preventive veterinary medicine in particular with regard to animal health, food safety and environmental aspects

Perform basic laboratory techniques, conduct general clinical examination of domestic animals and master the principles of asepsia, sterilization, injection techniques, blood sampling, suturing techniques and wound healing

Safe and responsible handling of animals

To have knowledge of the current and future applications of artificial intelligence in veterinary medicine and veterinary management and the ethical implications thereof

Perform and interpret a clinical examination of different organ systems to distinguish normal from abnormal clinical findings in domestic animal species.

Independently search for, analyze and value scientific information, both in the own language and in English

Independently make scientific observations and be able to interpret them critically and creatively

Selecting and applying optimal methods for morphological, pathological, microbiological and (bio) chemical research and interpreting the results

To have insight into the limits and uncertainties of current veterinary knowledge

Being aware of the importance of scientific integrity

To have knowledge of the 3Rs methods (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement) and their implementation

Independently critically analyze, assess and solve a simple (veterinary) problem

Logical reasoning for (bio) medical and veterinary problems

Dare to creatively solve (bio) medical and veterinary issues

Work accurately with theoretical and manual assignments and dissections

To have a critical-reflective attitude, for example by approaching problems from multiple perspectives

To be convinced of the need for practical and academic life long learning, self-evaluation and peer-group evaluation processes to improve one's own performance during the later professional career

To be aware of the social role of the veterinarian in sustainable food production, food safety and environmental conservation

Contribute to the advancement of veterinary knowledge and the concept of One Health, with the aim of promoting animal health and welfare, the quality of animal care and veterinary public health

Exhibit an ethical, professional and socially responsible behavior both inside and outside the veterinary environment

Work Placements and Clinics during Summer Recess Prior to Start of Academic Year

From 08/07/2013 till 21/09/2013 work placements/ clinics can be organised for students who will have said work placements/ clinics as part of their student's curriculum.
